VPO Recording HistoryI began recording this movement after completing the first movement on 17.June 2010. Creating the rendition of this composition turned out to be by far the most challenging one of all my renditions so far: this movement is quite long (70 pages, 731 bars), has a very rich orchestration, requiring many instruments in each group, and uses the possibilities of the instruments to their fullest extent. I managed to complete the recording of all notes in a first draft by 5.July 2010. This initial draft did not yet have all the proper spatialisation of the multiple instruments in each group; so far I only placed the groups at one location. The final challenge was to create the tempo map. I have decided on a more rapid tempo than some of the existing orchestra recordings. After one more day of work on setting the tempo, the first release of this movement was on 6.July 2010. This completed the recording of Symphony No 1 in its traditional 4-part structure which is usually the way this work is performed. In September 2010 I did a first revision of this movement, creating a more vibrant and dynamic tempo map. In March 2011 I revised this movement again, strengthening the strings by adding two more layers for each string group. This provided a smoother sound and also added more punchy attack, which is required in large segments of this movement.
