Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911):"Mit vollen Segeln" ("Set with full sails")Symphony No.1 D Major, 2nd Movement (Scherzo) |
Latest Recording: 17.May 2011 |
Recording HistoryThis recording was begun on 27. March 2010. The first step was to record a "piano excerpt" through live play on the keyboard, in order to shape the tempo timeline. The metric was then obtained by a "Fit Improvisation" in SONAR. Based on this timeline, each track was recorded, sometimes in live play, sometimes in step sequencing. It turned out that the tempo baseline from my live piano excerpt recording was in most parts not usable (I am just not such a good player...), and I had to remove this original live tempo mapping and replace it with a more straight tempo. On 27.April 2010 the first part was completed (up to the Trio). On 26.May 2010 the first recording of this movement was completed. The tempo instructions at the beginning state: "Kräftig bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell" (strongly moved, but not too fast). I was in particular observing the "not too fast" part: in my opinion, many recordings play this Ländler-type movement inappropriately fast, and I felt that it should be taken slower. However, my initial recording from 25.April 2010 was taking it a bit too slowly... so I revised the tempo and played it faster on the 26.April version. However, in the first complete release of this movement on 26.April I did again slow down the tempo in the beginning - it just feels more natural. The tempo then slowly increases at some crucial points, and in the reprise at the end the tempo is actually faster than in the beginning. The Eulenburg score notes a tempo of 3/4 = 66 bpm, which translates as 192 qpm - in my opinion this must be a mistake, as this is inappropriately fast. The Trio in the middle is given at 3/4 = 54, which translates to 162 qpm - also appears a bit fast. The text says there "ja nicht eilen" (freely translated as "hurry under no circumstances"), and so I took it slightly slower than the indicated metronomic value. Discussions
